Putin is a bad student of history. Ukrainians have a long history and even longer memory of Russian (also Soviet) abuses. After Stalin's starvation and deportation policies in the 1920s-1930s, Ukraine lost around 20 million lives. WW II saw Stalin throw them into senseless battles to die for the Greater Soviet Cause. These actions saw Ukraine have almost 500,000 of their fighting age men join the Germans. They created three Ukrainian Waffen SS Divisions and the Russian Army of Liberation (ROA) under Lt. Gen. Andrei Vlasov just to fight the Communists.
Putin miscalculated, as I predicted. He started a war he cannot win with conventional forces. Ukraine will make Afghanistan look like a great ides. If he bombs it into rubble, he creates Stalingrad 2.0. If he uses gas or tactical nukes, then that brings the World Court and United Nations into it (if they ever grow a spine). NATO would have something to say about that if radiation causes damage as Chernobyl did. He has civilian unrest back home with people who know he is wrong.
Russia is a pariah state, like China should be. I am sure Putin's senior military leadership are looking for a way out, and his billionaire oligarchs, who just lost global banking privileges, are less than happy with him. I would suspect old Vladimir will beef up his bodyguard. Looks like a rough ride. History teaches us many things. If the Ukrainian population did not have access to military weapons, then this would already be over. I bet Ukraine adopts a 2nd Amendment.
Their playbook is in motion. They are pushing out respiratory illness bioweapons. This may be mild, but we don’t know what else they plan to release, especially now that Trump won. Get prepared and have hard-to-get medications at home.
